Quarantine's been going on for a while now, and if you're like us here at The Smoky Mountain News, you're ready to go out and have some fun. The going out part may still have to wait, but for now quench your thirst for social interaction by joining us each week for an online trivia tournament presented by Boojum Brewing Company, Waynesville Yoga Center, and Jackson County Commissioner Ron Mau, Wednesdays at 7 p.m. via Zoom. Keep these great local businesses in mind when looking for eats and exercise!

Here's how it works:

  1. Create a Zoom account at www.zoom.us, or download the app. It's free!

  2. Pick a team leader to register your team using this form. To fill it out, you will need an email address for each member of your team. This must be the same email address they used to create their Zoom account. You will be able to edit the list of team members after you originally submit it, but the deadline to sign up is 6 p.m. Wednesday. Don't wait till the last minute, though — trivia is capped at 100 people, with spots given on a first-come, first-served basis. At 6 p.m. on trivia day, you'll receive an email with log-on info.

  3. Join the Zoom meeting prior to 7 p.m. Rename yourself with your team name in front of your actual name. You should be able to do this by hovering over your image once you join the meeting.

  4. Quizmaster and SMN Staff Writer Cory Vaillancourt will greet you promptly at 7 p.m. Trivia will consist of five rounds of eight questions each. After each question, you’ll be pushed to a breakout room that includes only your teammates to discuss the answer for 60 seconds. You’ll get some extra time at the end of the round to go over your answers before turning them in. You team leader should use the form for that round, located under the "Team Leader" tab, to submit your answers. We'll score the responses and gather everyone back to the main room, where Cory will read out each question with its correct answer, and then list the team rankings. After that, it's on to the next round!

  5. We know the internet exists...but please ignore that fact while forming your answers. We're all here to have some fun and break up the monotony a bit, and it's just no fun when Google plays. That guy knows everything.

  6. Have fun, and plan on joining us next Wednesday too!

Oh, and a quick note... Trivia is our free gift to you, our Western North Carolina community, but we do take tips!
